Prayer Closet Warrior Training – Part 2

Prayer Closes Warrior Training 2Yesterday I shared a story from my past that made me take a hard look at how I had been praying.  The Lord led me to the book of Colossians and there I read what Paul wrote to those believers and how he included them in his prayers.  What I read there convicted and humbled me and I realized that I needed to be praying in exactly the same way.  Let’s look at those verses from Colossians Chapter 1.

9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

Paul, and those with him, had heard good things about the believers at Colossae; Paul had a fervent love for those men and women.  Paul wanted them to know that he and his fellow believers were praying for them without ceasing and that they were on his mind and heart on a daily basis.  Paul was consistent in his prayers and, like him, we must be also.

Paul tells them that he is interceding on their behalf that they be filled with the knowledge of the will of God and that they not lack for wisdom and spiritual understanding.  In other words, Paul’s greatest desire for his spiritual children was that they know the will of God and that they be able to execute it with wisdom.

The first time I read that it was like a giant light bulb clicked on in my head.  The greatest prayer I can pray for another believer is that they be filled with the knowledge of the will of God and that they have the wisdom and understanding to carry it out!  Those words were powerful to me then and they are still powerful to me now.

10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;

Verse 10 is incredibly encouraging to me.  What does a man or woman look like who walks worthy of the Lord and is fruitful in good works while increasing in the knowledge of God?  It looks like a man or woman that is blessing everyone they come in contact with and a person that I very much want to be around!

Praying this for someone that you know is putting that person on the fast track to Godliness.  Prayer is powerful and this prayer in particular speaks to a life that is owned by God and lived for God. In my mind I picture a walking, talking, heavenly fruit tree that gives blessed shade and the fruit of good works while lifting their branches skyward in constant praise to the Father.  Oh that we would pray for more people like this!

11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy;

Paul knows that anyone who is living a life so visibly unto God will come under Satanic attack and that Satan’s greatest weapons are his ability to distract, discourage and accuse.  Paul’s prayer here is for strengthening and for endurance for the trials that will inevitably come, but the news here is still good.  This strengthening comes from God’s glorious power (can you imagine the magnitude of that?  I want to see it!) and includes joy.

We can pray that our brothers and sisters be strengthened and that there might be joy in suffering.  And the amazing thing to me is that this is a prayer that God loves to answer!  God loves to say to His children “This suffering has no power over you, feel my strength and joy and watch as it fills your life”.  I want that to be true for everyone that I know and love, don’t you?

12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.

Paul begins and ends with thanks.  As always, his focus was on thanking God for His great love and redemption plan.  As we thank God, our focus shifts to Him and away from ourselves and our circumstances.  Thankfulness should be our first and last resort because even if we were to lose everything we had on this earth in an instant, we would still be Children of the Most High God who were bought with a price and redeemed forevermore.

Your salvation is assured.  Your inheritance is being prepared even now.  God wants to lead you home but before we get there we have work to do, and no work for the Kingdom is more important than prayer.

These last 2 days we have focused on prayer for other believers.  Prayer is such a big, important subject that it would be impossible to overstate it and there are other types of prayer yet to be examined.  We will return to the subject of prayer very soon as we continue our Prayer Closet Warrior Training and I hope that God has blessed you as much as He has blessed me through these scripture verses.

If this has challenged you, affirmed you or helped you I would love to hear from you and what God is doing in your life.  Let us always encourage one another!

Prayer Closet Warrior Training – Part 1

prayer closet warrior trainingDo you pray often?  If so, do you pray for other believers?  And when you pray for other believers, how do you pray for them?  Hopefully you are better at it than I used to be.

I used to primarily pray for the safety of my family and friends.  “Lord, keep them safe as they go today” or “Lord, bring them back safely”.  These are good prayers and when prayed genuinely, God hears them.

Sometimes I would also pray for traveling mercies for those who were going on a trip.  This is closely related to the prayer for safety but also includes (I believe) a prayer for ease of passage and a peaceful journey.  This is also a good prayer.

Every once in a while I would see someone hurting, sad or depressed and I would pray that God would comfort them and ease their sorrow.  God comforts His children and we are blessed when we pray for others in this way.  Once again, this is a good prayer.

These three types of prayers made up the great majority of my prayers for others for many years.  I was genuine and prayed from the heart and I believe God heard and answered them.

And then something happened that rocked me to my core and completely changed the way that I prayed for others.

There was a man that I greatly respected.  He held a position of authority in his church and was a pillar in his community.  I had enjoyed his hospitality on occasion, I liked being around him and outwardly he had everything going for him.  When he was arrested for breaking the law by falling to sexual temptation it was like someone had knocked the very breath out of me.

As I began to pray and read God’s word for comfort I came across the book of Colossians.  Right away the Spirit began to speak and to convict me through Paul’s words.

We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you” (Colossians 1:3 NKJV) is how Paul begins.  Thankfulness is so important in the life of the believer and we are never more open to God’s instruction than when we come into His presence with a thankful heart.  Paul knew this and his letters are filled with thankfulness, just as our lives should be.  Notice at the end how Paul says he is praying always for his friends in Colossae.

9 “For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy;12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.”

In four little verses Paul shares great wisdom with us.  Paul gives us the recipe for how to pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ.  These four verses are what so convicted me and I realized that I had not been praying as I should.  I don’t think I had ever prayed a prayer like that one in my entire life!

While I had not encouraged this man in his sin I also had not been doing my duty to pray for him as a leader in the community and in the church and more importantly, as a brother in Christ.  I was not lifting my brother up as I should and I share in his failure and his sorrow.

Brothers and sisters, we need each other.  We need to encourage one another, we need to teach and admonish one another and most of all, we need to pray for one another.  We need to take Paul’s prayer for the church at Colossae and make it our own.  Can you imagine the net effect this would have on the body of believers if we all committed to praying for each other in this way?

In tomorrow’s post we will go deeper into those three verses in Colossians and examine them closely.  What elements, exactly, make Paul’s prayer so very powerful and so very effective?  And how can we take those same elements and apply them to our prayers today?

For now, I ask that you think about the way that you pray and especially the way that you pray for others believers.  God can use your prayers to meet needs and to perform powerful acts of righteousness here on earth, but only if we are praying for the right things and in the right way.

It’s a Beautiful Day in the (Blogging) Neighborhood!

Matthew Gaither Guest Post at ofdustandkings.comTime to get out and visit a friendly neighborhood blogger over at Of Dust and Kings, home of Mr T E Hanna!  Mr Hanna has been gracious enough to feature a guest post written by yours truly today on his site.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to write for Of Dust and Kings.  Mr Hanna has challenged and inspired me by the articles he posts and I always look forward to his updates.

As I mentioned in my first Monday update, the working title for my guest piece was “The Best Me” but it can be found under the title ” Recovering Our Humanity: The Secret Life Of A Submitted Servant” right here.

Please head over to Ofdustandkings.com and I hope you enjoy the article!

How Do You Give Light to Your House?

Jesus Christ is the Light of the World - I want to be a lightWhat does it mean to you to “give light to your house”?  That phrase is the key thought for Matthew515.com and comes directly from the verse Matthew 5:15.

For me, it means I must live a life that promotes the Truth, practices encouragement and prioritizes generosity.

God is truth.  I recognize Him as the author of all truth, the creator and sustainer of all life and the author of the Bible by inspiration of His Holy Spirit.  Without Him nothing exists and my existence is based solely on His grace and His generosity.  I am saved out of a life of spiritual death into a new life in Jesus Christ by His grace through my faith in Him.

This is the truth that I must promote.  I must say it and I must show it with my actions.  I am not perfect; far from it.  I have a long way to go in my knowledge and maturity as a Christian but I believe that God is faithful and will provide that which I need to do His work.  I am a work in progress.

I want to be an encouragement to those I come in contact with.  I want to, with smiles, kind words, handshakes, friendly hugs, pats on the back and a humble heart, encourage and build up not only my brothers and sisters in Christ but also those who are lost and in need.

This is not easy but it is worth it and I take it seriously.  There is so much need for encouragement in our world today.  My hope and prayer is that by being one who encourages others a brother or sister in Christ may be strengthened in their faith and a lost person may see the love of God in me.  This is a worthy cause and blesses me as much, or more, than it blesses the one who is receiving the encouragement.

I am learning to prioritize generosity.  In this, my wife is a great example.  She is a natural gift giver and spends much of her time doing things for others.  She inspires and encourages me by her actions and I love her for it.

This does not come as easily to me as it does to her.  I am more likely to be found with my nose in a book (or on the computer, truth be told) and can be rather oblivious at times.  I am training myself to try and notice the needs of the people around me and to be a cheerful giver of my time and resources.

I truly believe that one of the reasons that God has so blessed Vicki and I is because of her faithfulness in being a cheerful giver.  She is the holder of the checkbook in my house and has over the course of the last 14 years of marriage, with limited resources, always given above and beyond the tithe while keeping us in the black each month.  It has not always been easy but  we have always had the money to meet any needs that came our way.

I praise the Lord for my wife and for how He has worked in my family over the years and I want to follow in the example of my generous (and wise) spouse.

To give light to those I come in contact with I must continue to promote the truth, practice encouragement and prioritize generosity.  This is the practical application of the light spoken of in Matthew 5:15 as I see it.

How are you applying Matthew 5:15 in your life?  What does it mean to you to “give light to your house?”  As always, I welcome your comments and would love to hear what God is doing in your life.

Are We Wasting Time By Asking the Wrong Question?

questionsignIn certain circles, both on the internet and in person, much is being made of issues that affect the modern church.

First there was the Southern Baptist Convention Annual meeting and the ensuing condemnation of the Boy Scouts and their decision to allow gay scout leaders.

Because my role model and guide is Jesus Christ I have to stop and wonder if Jesus and His disciples would have met together and decided to issue an edict condemning one of the many sins of His day. Would they have contracted runners and messengers to spread the proclamation to all corners of Israel? “Hear ye, Hear ye, Jesus does not like what you are doing, please stop at once!”

Does that sound like the way Jesus operated while He was on this earth? Can you really see Him doing such a thing? Somehow I think He would have been far more compassionate and far more direct. He seemed to favor compassionate honesty that got right to the heart of the matter (man’s relationship with his Heavenly Father) over anything else and so should we.

More recently, Rachel Held Evans wrote a piece for CNN about why Millennials are leaving the church. It is a thought provoking piece and it does raise some questions that need to be answered. In response, people from all kinds of belief systems are chiming in from all over the internet with all kinds of answers.

I have to wonder, however, if in both cases if we aren’t asking the wrong question.

What good is it to condemn the behavior of the lost and the searching or to ask why people have become disillusioned with the church before we ask where their heart stands in relation to Jesus Christ? I strongly suspect that once you have answered the latter you will have the answer to the former.  (Please note that I am not denying that problems exist within our churches that drive people away or that churches should minister to people right where they are without prejudice, because both are true!)

The problems facing mankind today may be different than the problems faced in Jesus’ day but the underlying cause remains the same. Whenever “self” is glorified over God and whenever man’s will is chosen before God’s will, sin occurs. And sin always has consequences.

Two profound C.S. Lewis quotes apply here; “We have a strange illusion that mere time cancels sin. But mere time does nothing either to the fact or to the guilt of a sin” and “Every uncorrected error and unrepented sin is, in its own right, a fountain of fresh error and fresh sin flowing on to the end of time”. C.S. Lewis knew that sin has grave consequences and that a life lived apart from the redeeming power of Jesus Christ is one of continual error and sin.

Viewed in that light it is not so hard to understand why we are dealing with some of the problems that we now face, both in our churches and in the world around us.

With that in mind we need to start asking the right questions. “Have you heard the gospel?” “Have you committed your life to Jesus Christ?” “Are you living every day unto your Maker and Creator?” And my favorite one, “Does your life bring glory to God?”

These are the right questions. Once we as believers recommit ourselves to asking these questions and to continually pointing the way to Jesus Christ both with our lives and our words then, and only then, will we see our world changed for the better through the power of God.

Please feel free to comment if you feel lead. I would love to hear from you!

The Best Me

Yellow Butterfly Purple FlowersToday’s post isn’t actually here! Today’s post is a guest piece I submitted to Mr. T.E. Hanna over at his blog, Of Dust and Kings.

Several weeks ago I contacted Mr. Hanna and asked him if he minded taking a look at my site and if he had any advice for improvements to matthew515. He had several great suggestions, one of which was guest posting on other blogs in order to build relationships and readership in the blogging community.

The piece I wrote tells the story of how matthew515 came to be and about the kind of Christian I was before I gave God complete control of my life. The working title was “The Best Me” but in it’s final form it is entitled “Recovering Our Humanity: The Secret Life Of A Submitted Servant”.

I would very much appreciate it if you would click the link and read not only my guest post but also take a look at Mr. Hanna’s site as I am sure that it will bless, challenge and encourage you. If you find something that interests you, please leave a comment and join in the discussion.

Update: I’ve been informed that this guest post update will actually go live on Wednesday morning and not today. Sorry for the confusion. I’ll set another reminder here for Wednesday morning. Thank you for your patience.

The Prayer Journal Experiment

Matthew515 Prayer JournalOn Beyond Evangelical, the author, Frank Viola made a post recently about goal setting and how to include those in your prayer life.

I am very familiar with prayer requests.  They are a regular part of my daily prayers and they are also a regular part of my church experience in both Sunday School and Worship Service.  The idea of the prayer request is that you not only petition God for your request but you also voice your request to other believers and ask that they pray for your request as well.

This is a Biblical practice.  14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. (James 5:14-16)

Frank Viola’s idea and practice is to take this one step further.  He actually has a journal that he uses to write down his dreams, his goals and his prayer requests and while he is more goal oriented that I am at the present, his idea has a lot of merit.

I now have purchased a small, black journal that I have begun to write down specific prayer requests and also specific praises as God has answered prayers I made before I got the journal.

Right now it is just the first page on which I am working and there are just 6 prayer requests and 2 praises listed.  I am starting small but I am already excited about what God is going to do with this humble beginning.

I know that by being specific in my journal and in my prayer requests that I can watch, over time, how God is answering my prayers and also how He is moving and working in me.  Perhaps some of the things I have written down are not as important as I think they are.   Perhaps I need to be faithful and patient in my current circumstances before God is ready to show me other things.  Perhaps the answers will come shortly or in many years down the road.

The point of this experiment is not the ultimate answer or answers although that is a great benefit.  The point of this experiment is that I be watchful, continuing in prayer and expecting God to show up and be amazing.  And most of all, that I be ready and waiting for His provision.

Do any of you keep prayer journals or a written record of your prayer life?  I would love to hear about it if you would not mind sharing.  Your comments, questions and thoughtful responses are always appreciated.

Psalm 143 Speaks to Me

psalm143Do you ever wake up feeling tense and tired instead of refreshed and rejuvenated?  I had one of those mornings today.  It is a sure sign that I was focusing my mind on my circumstances and not on God’s grace and provision.

I knew that I was going to be working late and I knew that I had tasks that needed to be completed before I left for work and somewhere along the line those tasks became my focus.  In other words, I stopped abiding with Him in my mind and in my heart and I became troubled and not at all peaceful.

I needed to spend some time alone with the Lord, confess my wrongs and allow him to renew my mind.  My devotional took me to Psalm 143 and as I read and re-read it I was amazed at how relevant and wonderful the words were to me.

143 Hear my prayer, O Lord,
Give ear to my supplications!
In Your faithfulness answer me,
And in Your righteousness.
2 Do not enter into judgment with Your servant,
For in Your sight no one living is righteous.

This was exactly my situation.  I was talking to God and asking Him to hear me and to forgive me for my wrong and acknowledging that I have no righteousness apart from Him.

3 For the enemy has persecuted my soul;
He has crushed my life to the ground;
He has made me dwell in darkness,
Like those who have long been dead.
4 Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me;
My heart within me is distressed.

Do you want to know where your doubts and fears come from and who encourages such thoughts?  Look no further than the evil one who is our enemy and the enemy of all that is good.  Spend any time at all listening to him and your heart, like mine, will become distressed.

5 I remember the days of old;
I meditate on all Your works;
I muse on the work of Your hands.
6 I spread out my hands to You;
My soul longs for You like a thirsty land.

Remembrance of God’s mighty works in your life and in the lives of other believers and in His Word is always good medicine for a troubled heart.  It reminds us that God is faithful and strong to save.  In our remembrance we gain hope and in our hope we gain joy for what God has done and what He is about to do.

7 Answer me speedily, O Lord;
My spirit fails!
Do not hide Your face from me,
Lest I be like those who go down into the pit.
8 Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning,
For in You do I trust;
Cause me to know the way in which I should walk,
For I lift up my soul to You.

With hope in the Lord and joy in our hearts our requests and our praise comes naturally.  I urgently wanted to hear from God and to know His direction for me today and it was then, as I sought him with all of my heart, the He answered and encouraged me.  He will do the same for you!

9 Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies;
In You I take shelter.
10 Teach me to do Your will,
For You are my God;
Your Spirit is good.
Lead me in the land of uprightness.

God is so faithful and so good to us.  He always hears and answers a genuine prayer made in faith from one of His children.  He shows us His will and He leads us one step at a time as long as we continue to take shelter in Him.

11 Revive me, O Lord, for Your name’s sake!
For Your righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of trouble.
12 In Your mercy cut off my enemies,
And destroy all those who afflict my soul;
For I am Your servant.

I am a servant of the King.  He has revived me for His name sake and He has set me back on His path and restored my soul.  I praise Him for His greatness and mercy today and I pray that if you are weary and troubled that you read and apply Psalm 143.  It will greatly bless you, just as it did for me.

I Need to be Open

opendoorLast week I posted about the need to be clean.  Today I am going to talk about something that is just as important.

To be the kind of servant and instrument that God would have me to be requires that I practice holiness.  I must be set apart for His service and keep myself clean and deal with sin seriously and immediately.  Only then can I be used in the way that God would have me to be used; an instrument to bring glory to Him.

I also need to be open.  I need to be real.  I need to be humble and realistic about who and what I am before my God and before others.

I am a human being.  I am a man.  I am a sinner.  I am also a child of the most high God who has been called out of darkness and into His light.  What a contrast!

Looking around the internet at other Christian blogs and even at my own blog I sometimes get the feeling that we write as if we have all of the answers and as if we have already “arrived”.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

I am just as flawed and just as prone to failure as any other person.  Although I strive to live a life that is pleasing to God and to love Him with all of my heart, all of my soul and all of my mind I often fall well short of my goal.

We all fall short of the glory of God.  Because we are human and because we have a sinful nature and because God allows us to choose between His way and our way we fail and we fail often.

I believe I need to be open about my failures and honest about my weakness.  I think anyone who professes to speak God’s truth and to speak from a position of authority needs to be genuine and needs to acknowledge their limitations.  I must be humble and I must be willing to share my failures and shortcomings as readily as I share my victories and successes.

Right now is a perfect example.  Although I know the message that I am trying to convey is a good one the actual flow of this post is proving to be very difficult.  This paragraph has changed 3 or 4 times in the last 10 minutes and I finally had to stop, close my eyes and pray that God would direct my hand and my words and help me to say what is on my heart.

I told the Lord that my thoughts were rambling around like an old, rusty truck with just as much noise and clatter and that I needed to be settled and assured of His presence and His power.  God heard and answered my prayer and impressed upon me to write down exactly what was happening and to be the open and genuine person that I am writing about today.  I am weak;  He is strong and faithful.

As I continue with matthew515 I am going to strive to show more of myself, both the good and the bad.  I truly think that being open and genuine is the only way that a site like this can work.

It is no value to anyone who reads this site if I pretend to be something that I am not and I think that there is a world out there that is desperate to see real people living a life of genuine faith in God.  That is the kind of light I want to be and I hope and pray that it is the kind of light that you want to be as well.

I welcome your comments and suggestions and would love to hear what God is doing in your life.  Let us encourage one another!

I Need to be Clean

cleanwaterThere is a song that has been on my mind recently.  It convicts me of my sin nearly every time I think about it or sing it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDAfRJ7CuFw

This version of the song is performed by Kutless although I believe it was originally performed by Chris Tomlin on an album called Worship Together Live 2001: Pour Over Me.

It is amazing how songs written with God’s truth at their forefront can continue to bless and be relevant through the years.  “Give us Clean Hands” is certainly such a song.

The more I study God’s word and the more I want to know Him the more I realize that I must be clean if I am to be usable and set apart for His service.  What originally seemed to be a frightening idea (give up my will in exchange for His will) is actually turning out to be a fantastic adventure that fills me with wonder and awe.

I am more excited to see what God is going to do in me, through me and around me than I have ever been at any time in my life.  If I am to continue in this adventure, this walk, this life lived for God then I must do as it says in Romans 12:2 “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God“.

I need to be renewed daily and sometimes hourly.  In my human weakness it is all too easy for me to take my eyes off the God I love and instead focus on my circumstances or get distracted by something I think I want or need.  And it is in those times that I make mistakes and I sin against God.

There is no sugarcoating sin.  It is an affront to God and it must be dealt with if we are to be the people that God wants us to be.

Thank the Father for the Son because it is only by His sacrifice and His love for us that we can claim 1 John 1:9 which promises “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness“.

I need to be clean.  My prayer today is for hands that are clean and a heart that is pure.  Give me clean hands, Lord.  Give me clean hands.
